Yes, we’ve all heard about the magnanimous speech on the release of the fifteen navy crew in Tehran. But some lines inserted in midst of that verdict almost brought a curtain call to the stage. I was quite amused.
One of sailors was a woman.
In his own words, President Ahmadinejad said “Why is it that the most difficult missions, naval inspections, be given to a mother, who is carrying out a mission thousands of miles away from her child?”
Shortly after he honoured the Iranian troops for capturing them, he went on to shake hands with the 15 crew on stage. There was this climatic wave of emotions, deliberately and to some extent brilliantly crafted. There was even a champagne popping moment later on in the evening. But until the 15 touch down on British soil, skepticism prevails.
And I hope to God, they’ll be sent back alive.
