Expat on a Shoestring

September 23, 2008

I was all psyched up to take a vacation to the east with a friend but today i woke up a little wiser (and feeling like shit) - it would cost me my one month’s rent.

Homeless or Holiday.

To comfort the self, I am already “on vacation”.
So next week’s Bayram (9 days) holiday will be spent exploring nooks and crannies of the city with me, myself and I.

*Bayram is Idil Fitri aka Muslim festive season

…the illusion of effortlessness requires great effort, indeed.

Today i learnt the turkish word for ‘ant’.
It was by far the hardest word for me to ask a turkish person. It goes from, oh you mean ‘end’, no ‘and’? what you mean?

Then pause… long pause. She waited for me to finish my sentence “and….”
By this time, it was such a laborious process there is no turning back. I HAVE TO FIND OUT what is ‘ant’ is in turkish.
Of course I could google it or use an online sozluk, but it was not about the meaning anymore.

Ant (the insect) in Turkish is KARINCA.

And we both celebrated the joyous occasion.

the smell of food, from every corner, is teasing me like a summer fling.

may i include, have a good ramadhan.

Two weeks into studded heels and power suits, i still do not know if this is temporary or a ladder up for real. For one third the figure that most of you would badge as a graduate, i get compensated with meeting sons of ministers and a princess of a sultan from across the former home ground.

An investment i’d like to believe, and this is not one for the short haul.

Back to Basics

Amidst grand ideas and wishful thinking, there are more pressing issues to settle for now; a mattress to buy, house keys to duplicate and clothe hangers to fill up the wardrobe with.

It’s rather humbling to note that you can change the world for all you want but will still have to ponder about these nitty gritty details of life. Unless of course if you move into a ready made ultra luxury eco design boutique house by the bahamas - FULLY FURNISHED. But what’s the fun is that.

Salt and pepper shakers will have to match the kitchen top, cans of aerosol to keep a home pest-free, toilet paper to stock up adequately, and suddenly I have to think of which dish frame holder to buy because the plates will have to dry up in style.
